I grew up in the midst of people with a fairer skin tone, while I have a dark skin tone.

So they quickly mocked my skin tone and called me ‘Blacky charcoal,’ at every slight provocation.

It got to me and made me feel bad, I could wait to grow up so I can bleach my skin so that the bullying and body shaming would stop! So I thought.

My parents found out about the intimidation before it stole my glory, the day I asked my mother why I was so black and not fair like others!

They made me feel like I was the most beautiful girl ever and bought me relevant books eventhough they are not part of the recommended text for schools. My mother always told me that I am unique and my colour cannot be bought in the market.

Their words moulded me, and I grew up to become a very confident woman. If you have read my first book, THE GIRL WHO FOUND WATER, a non-fiction, you would realise that there is no way I could achieve those feat if I am not confident and brave. I facilitated sinking the first borehole in a village of over 6000, which provided them with clean water for the first time. On the day of the project commissioning, they renamed the place after me and gave me chieftancy title, Lady Haske, which means Lady of the light.

And No! I did not bleach! My melanin is shinning!

Several years later, when I had my child, immediately I held her in my arms, I observed that her right hand is different from the other parts of her body. It had a big black mark. I immediately remembered the bullying I went through and imagined that people would like to pick on her visible marks and mock her. I decided there and then that I will write a book to teach her confidence and self love.

I did not know that other children that did not have birthmarks would connect with the book it so well!

My Birthmark, My Gift is about Chedo, a young girl who was born with a birthmark. She is also very talented, yet her peers bully her because of her unique birthmark.

It has become the favorite book of every child that read it.
